The lack of sediment in the riverbed and the lack of coordinated sediment management across the riverbed are causing serious problems in the biosphere reserve Mura-Drava-Danube, from water management and supply to all aspects of local life and prosperity. Although sediment problems affect different sectors, there is a lack of forward communication between stakeholders and managers.
The first Sediment Dialogue Workshop, held in Varaždin on 22 October during the DRAVA LIFE Symposium, brought together stakeholders from Austria, Slovenia, Croatia, Hungary and Serbia and started an effective discussion. More than 80 experts from business, water management, nature conservation, society and science took the first steps towards a fair approach to river ecosystems in all their complexity, from the riverbed to groundwater and farmland. The dialogue will continue through bilateral and small group consultations and regular plenary meetings.
