In June, as part of the Monoštor forest restoration project, the Public Enterprise ‘Vojvodinašume’ Petrovaradin (VSUME) purchased the necessary equipment for the Šmaguc and Zverinjak tree nurseries. These nurseries will grow native seedlings of oak (Quercus robur) and ash (Fraxinus excelsior), species to be used for the conversion of poplar plantations into alluvial forests (HT 91F0) on 26.5 ha in the Monoštor area of the Special Nature Reserve “Gornje Podunavlje”.
The equipment procured (2 typhons, a tractor, a milling machine, ploughs for removal and ploughing, and a trailer for transporting seedlings) was essential as the current nursery capacity cannot support the production of enough seedlings for reforestation. Nursery production is under significant pressure due to climate change and water shortages, resulting in a loss of 15% to 35% of seedlings during the production process.
The implementation of the full conversion will complement the planned Monoštorski rit side channel extension and improvement, which aims to improve the natural hydrological conditions of the area to ensure favourable conditions for native floodplain forests.
