After three modules, the “MDD Rivers Fit” training programme, which brought together partners and planners to share international expertise in integrated river restoration, has come to an end. Led by REVITAL GmbH, the programme facilitated knowledge exchange and practical learning experiences.
The training consisted of three modules held in Eastern Tyrol, Vienna (Austria) and Radenci (Slovenia). Participants gained a comprehensive understanding of river morphology and sediment ecology through site visits to completed restoration projects. They engaged directly with project experts to learn about the entire restoration process, from initial planning to construction and post-project development.
Through practical fieldwork, participants learned to:
- Collect and analyze baseline data
- Assess field parameters
- Design restoration measure concepts
- Evaluate the morphological, hydraulic, and ecological impacts of planned interventions
- Apply state-of-the-art restoration techniques
- Implement integrated planning approaches
The final session in Radenci, Slovenia, marked the culmination of the training programme. Participants presented their detailed restoration projects for specific stretches of the Mur, Drava and Danube rivers. These presentations sparked valuable group discussions on expected outcomes and implementation challenges, with constructive feedback from both trainers and peers. Field visits were organised by the Slovenian Nature Conservation Institute to present restoration projects along the Mura River and to share key insights and lessons learned from their experiences.
Upon successful completion of all modules, participants were certified as ‘River Restoration Experts for MDD‘, recognising their comprehensive training in river ecosystem restoration and management.
