The national training programme for Ambassadors of the UNESCO Lower Murtal Biosphere Reserve was successfully completed under the motto “Acquire, anchor and impart knowledge”, with 25 dedicated participants receiving their certification as Ambassadors of the Biosphere Reserve.
The diverse group of participants represented a vibrant cross-section of the community, bringing together members of the mountain and nature rescue services, educators, tourism industry professionals, local citizens and municipal employees from the biosphere reserve communities. This mix of backgrounds and ages enriched the learning experience for all involved.
The training programme was designed to deepen understanding of the unique characteristics, opportunities and potential of the biosphere reserve. A key focus was to help participants recognise the privilege of being part of this special habitat and to appreciate its special value to the local community. The curriculum offered an engaging mix of expert presentations and hands-on field trips that brought the Reserve’s natural wonders to life.
The programme began with a comprehensive overview of the UNESCO Five-country Biosphere Reserve Mura-Drava-Danube and then delved into specific topics such as nature conservation, sustainable tourism and the region’s rich flora and fauna. Of particular note was the examination of the impact of extreme weather events on the area and the critical importance of restoring natural river dynamics. Participants took part in numerous field trips, exploring the riparian forest along the Mura River, where they observed local species in their natural habitat and examined various cross-border conservation initiatives designed to give the river more space to follow its natural course.
The completion of this training not only marks the end of an intensive educational journey, but also the beginning of a new chapter as these enthusiastic and knowledgeable ambassadors prepare to share their passion for the Lower Mura Biosphere Reserve with the wider public. As key multipliers in their communities, they are now equipped to spread awareness and appreciation of this remarkable natural treasure.
