Forest grazing with pigs

A natural approach to forest regeneration in Murska šuma

As part of the LIFE RESTORE for MDD project, the Slovenian State Forests Ltd. (SiDG) carried out an activity to promote the natural regeneration of floodplain forests. Ten pigs lived on a one-hectare fenced area in the Murska šuma forest, along the Slovenian-Croatian-Hungarian border.

The aim of the activity is to preserve and improve the condition of floodplain forests, i.e. softwood and hardwood forests, and the fauna along the Mura River. By grazing the forest with pigs, the overgrowth of the herbaceous layer is reduced, and by walking, the pigs mix the humus and mineral layers of the soil, thus providing better growing conditions for the seeds. At the end of the work and before the oak was sown, we moved the pigs out of the fence. Additional sowing was carried out and in the future, additional planting of floodplain tree species was carried out, as well as the necessary maintenance.
